What Shapes Your Soul? The Power of Imagery in Your Spiritual Journey

We are visual creatures, woven together by a Creator who spoke the world into existence but then painted it with colors, textures, and light. From the moment you wake and the first ray of sun hits your eyelids, your soul begins its daily consumption. You see a vacation ad on social media, and suddenly, a longing for "rest" is triggered. You look at a cluttered room, and a sense of "chaos" settles in your chest.
As visionaries and Christian women creatives, we must understand a profound truth: Imagery is not passive. It is a seed. Every visual input we allow into our atmosphere is an invitation for our soul to lean in a certain direction.
In Chapter 7 of my devotional, The Language of Pearls, I explore the mystery of how a pearl is actually formed. It doesn’t just appear; it is shaped by layers. This week, I want to invite you to pause and ask yourself a sacred question: What imagery is shaping the pearl of your soul today?
Spiritual Growth Is Awakened
The eyes are the lamp of the body. When we look at the world around us, we aren't just identifying objects; we are imprinting our inner man with a library of possibilities. In our modern age, we are bombarded by "not so good" influences: imagery designed to make us feel insufficient, hurried, or disconnected from our Kingdom purpose.

When we dwell on imagery that promotes fear or comparison, we are essentially feeding the "irritant" inside the oyster without providing the "nacre": the beautiful coating that transforms the irritant into a pearl. Spiritual growth is awakened when we become intentional about the visual feasts we partake in.
If you are a purpose-driven entrepreneur or a creative at a crossroads in your calling, you know that clarity often feels like a disappearing mist. But clarity is often tied to what you have been beholding. Are you looking at the "giants" of the industry, or are you looking at the truth, beauty, and hope that God has already placed in your path?
The Layering of the Pearl: What Are You Beholding?
A pearl is a testament to resilience. It is formed when an irritant enters the oyster, and in response, the oyster begins to layer it with calcium carbonate: nacre. Layer upon layer, year after year, until what was once a source of pain or discomfort becomes a shimmering gem of great price.
Your soul works in much the same way. Every visual input you receive: whether it’s the art on your walls, the movies you watch, or the people you follow: acts as a layer. These layers create a "longing" within you.
- The World’s Imagery: Often imprints a longing for more, for faster, for louder. It breeds a soul that is always reaching but never arriving.
- Kingdom Imagery: Imprints a longing for the heart of the Father. It draws you toward peace, toward the "slow and steady" work of the Spirit, and toward transformational storytelling that heals instead of harms.
When we fill our minds with imagery that reflects God’s character, we are giving our souls the raw material needed to coat the irritants of life with grace. Nothing is impossible with God, and He often uses the beauty of His creation and the arts to remind us of this truth.

Creativity Is Celebrated
As creatives, we are called to be innovators and shepherds of the atmosphere. We don't just "make things"; we "breathe beauty into brokenness." But to do that effectively, we must first be filled.
If your creative well feels dry, look at what you’ve been looking at. Are you consuming more than you are contemplating? Are you scrolling through a digital landscape that leaves you feeling weary, or are you stepping into a space where creativity is celebrated as a sacred mission?
I believe God is calling this generation of Christian women to be "Visual Intercessors." This means using your creative arts: whether it’s painting, set design, writing, or dance: to shift the atmosphere of a room. When you create from a place of spiritual wholeness, the imagery you produce becomes a threshold moment for someone else. You are providing them with a new visual "layer" that speaks of God’s goodness.
Shifting Your Atmosphere: A Practical Invitation
The journey of "What Shapes the Pearl" is a lifelong curriculum of the heart. It requires us to be courageous enough to turn away from the noise and bold enough to seek out the quiet beauty of the Kingdom.
Begin where you feel drawn. Perhaps it’s changing the wallpaper on your phone to something that sparks prayer. Perhaps it’s spending twenty minutes in nature, allowing your eyes to rest on the intricate design of a leaf or the vastness of the sky.
When you intentionally curate your visual world, you are not just "decorating": you are cultivating a sanctuary where your Kingdom purpose can finally take root and grow. You are training your soul to recognize the moves of the Shepherd in the midst of the chaos.
A Threshold Moment
I want you to consider the "Heritage Words" you are speaking over your life right now. Are they words of life, or are they reflections of the broken imagery you’ve been consuming?
You are a canvas in the hands of the Great Artist. He is not finished with you. The pressure you feel is not a burial; it is the process of being formed. Every layer of beauty you add to your soul today: through what you see and what you believe: is preparing you for the moment you will be revealed as the pearl He always knew you were.
Where stories heal. Where beauty transforms. This is the space we are building together at DG Inspired Studios and through our School of the Arts.
Reflection Question:
Look around the room where you are sitting right now. What is one image or object that draws your heart closer to God, and what is one that distracts you? How can you shift your atmosphere today to better reflect your Kingdom identity?

A Benediction for the Creative Soul
May your spiritual eyes be opened to understand the importance of what you allow to enter into you, through your eyes and the meditation of your heart. May you see the hidden beauty of God in the mundane of the everyday. May you have the courage to turn your gaze away from what deforms and toward what restores. I pray that the atmosphere of your home and your heart becomes a fertile ground for the Holy Spirit to ignite new visions. May you rest in the truth that you are being beautifully layered by the hand of God, and may your work breathe life into every space you enter. Go forth in clarity, in courage, and in the wild hope of Christ. In Jesus' name,
Amen.
